Identified Need: Injuries are one of the leading causes of death and disability throughout the world, and they are on the rise in industrializing countries with increasing numbers of automobiles and construction booms. In 2004, the CIM began working with Project HOPE on addressing training and educational gaps among Chinese and Egyptian healthcare providers.
CIM's Solution: After conducting in-depth assessments of the state of emergency medicine practices in both countries, the CIM medical education and multimedia teams designed and produced a series of ground breaking multimedia-based training DVDs featuring case based scenarios incorporating real patient video footage shot in the U.S. and overseas. The DVDs, entitled “Fundamentals of Trauma” and “Introduction to Injury Care,” were delivered in English and Mandarin. To introduce the training DVDs into Egyptian and Chinese curricula, the CIM and Project HOPE conducted a series of train-the-trainer workshops, courses, and symposia in Emergency Medicine during which expert CIM physicians traveled to Cairo and Shanghai to work with their counterparts on teaching the material.
